FTC Seeks Public Input on Unfair or Deceptive Rental Fees to Protect Renters

What: On March 13, 2026, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to address unfair or deceptive practices relating to advertised rent and other fees in the rental housing industry.

Why: The FTC wants to create new rules to stop unfair or misleading fees in rental housing. They are asking the public to share comments, data, and opinions about hidden or confusing costs that renters face, from applying for housing to moving out. The goal is to make sure landlords and companies clearly show all required fees and get renters’ clear consent before charging them. The FTC also asks how a rule can be crafted to maximize the benefits to consumers and to minimize the costs to businesses, including small businesses.

Action: Read the proposed rule and submit comments before the April 13, 2026, deadline.
